Spur Gears are the simplest type of gears, featuring straight teeth and mounted on parallel shafts. Their main advantages are efficiency, ease of manufacturing, and cost-effectiveness. Because there is no axial thrust, they’re ideal for applications where precise alignment and simple design are needed. They also perform well at moderate speeds and can handle high torque loads.

However, spur gears can be noisy at high speeds due to the sudden engagement of teeth. This impact can lead to more wear and stress on the gear teeth, which limits their use in applications requiring smooth and quiet operation. They’re less suitable for high-speed or high-load conditions where vibration and noise are concerns.

Helical Gears, in contrast, have angled teeth that engage gradually, resulting in smoother and quieter operation. They can transmit more power between non-parallel (or parallel) shafts and operate more efficiently at higher speeds. The gradual engagement reduces wear and improves durability, making them well-suited for automotive, industrial, and high-performance machinery.

The main drawback of helical gears is the axial thrust they generate, which requires additional bearings or thrust washers to absorb the load. They are also more complex and expensive to manufacture compared to spur gears. Despite these factors, their superior performance in demanding applications often outweighs the disadvantages.
